Overview

Internet trolls are basically internet users who post offensive or rude comments to blogs or message boards. Their sole purpose is to rile up other users and get them to argue and become enraged. Internet trolls are very frequent. Most message boards seem to have at least one troll who post something that they know will anger somebody. Dedicated trolls will constantly check their post to see if they were successful. As soon as somebody "feeds" the troll by responding to their absurd post they get excited and continue their reign of terror on the blog. They feed off of anger of other users. Internet trolls can become very difficult to respond to. Many people tend to ignore the troll, which is probably the best way to handle them. If the troll does not get fed, the troll will become bored or even angry themselves and quit their antics on a message board. If you are dedicated to a blog and are being harassed by a troll I found this great page with tips on how to deal with internet trolls. Some of these tips are pretty useful such as ignoring their post by clicking the "ignore" button that many blogs have. If you are getting really upset you can take a more drastic approach by contacting the site owner who can ban them from the blog. Some of the tips don't seem as helpful as others like complimenting the troll or asking them to stop. Personally I feel like any commenting or interacting with the troll just fuels their desire. They are there to gain attention and by commenting at all you are acknowledging that they are there, giving them attention. The problem with just ignoring them is that it can ruin your blogging experience. You can be having an exchange with another user and a troll can come and ruin it which can be very difficult to ignore. Some trolls are so good at what they do that they actually become notorious. Here you will find the top ten trolls in internet history. If you check that list out you can see that there are various places that you can find trolls. Number ten is a Wikipedia editor while number seven harasses people on an online game.

I am very familiar with internet trolls because I am related to one. He is not as dedicated as one of the trolls in the top ten but his adrenaline gets flowing when he gets the chance to fluster people. I play on Xbox live with him, which is online gaming where you can interact with other people through a microphone and play video games with them. He loves to curse and get people angry. Another troll activity he partakes in is going to a music video on YouTube and posting under the comments how much that band sucks. He knows that people watch the music video because they like the band and he knows they will get upset when they see his comment. I am lucky enough (or unlucky) to know a troll and get behind the scenes of his activity. He finds all his trolling to be humorous. Once he has people sending him angry messages he laughs about it. I also found the only way to stop him is ignoring him. If you tell him to stop he knows your getting annoyed and keeps going but if you ignore him he gets bored and stops. Face to face with strangers he comes off as polite but as soon as he steps into the anonymous world of the internet he lets troll side take over and becomes ignorant and rude. (nfoltz).
